Matthiessen, Peter East of Lo Monthang: In the Kingdom of Mustang Boston, MA Shambhala Pubns 1995 1570621314 / 9781570621314 First Edition/First Printing Fine Fine Laird, Thomas Signed by Author This copy has been SIGNED by Peter Matthiessen on the title page! In its heyday (1400-1600), the Kingdom of Lo dominated the Kali Gandaki River trade between India and Tibet. By the 18th century Lo had lost control over this trade and had been incorporated into the modern Kingdom of Nepal. Isolated deep in the Himalaya, Lo's heriditary rajas retained most of their feudal powers and the area remained closed to the outside world until 1991. In the spring of 1992, author Peter Matthiessen and correspndent-photographer Thomas Laird traveled deep in the secret valley of Sao Kohla, tucked high in the northernmost reaches of the Himalaya. They were the first Westerners to venture there in thiry years. A beautiful oversized volume with Matthiessen's expansive narrative and Laird's poignant photographs reveal a place where mountains five miles high cast their shadows over the deepest canyon in the world; where 150-million-year-old fossils rise to the light of day at 13,000 feet; and where mountain nomads spend their lives herding their flocks across desolate slopes and through desert valleys, "utterly lost in the eternal earth and air". Matthiessen, Peter In the Spirit of Crazy Horse New York, New York, U.S.A. Viking Press 1991 0670836176 / 9780670836178 First Edition/First Printing Fine Fine Signed by Author This copy has been SIGNED by Peter Matthiessen on the title page! This is the 1991 re-issue of this powerful classic Matthiessen title which was kept off the shelves for eight years because of one of the most protracted and bitterly fought legal cases in publishing history - which makes clear why the traditional Indian concept of the sacred inviolability of the earth is so important, all the more so as increasing populations destroy the precious resources of the world. In an epilogue to this edition, the author presents startling new evidence supporting Peltier's repeated claims of innocence and argues persuasively that at the very least he deserves a new - and fair - trial. And attorney Martin Garbus contributes a new afterword, chronicling the legal battle to block the book's publication. Price:

Matthiessen, Peter Men's Lives: The Surfmen and Baymen of the South Fork. London, UK Collins Harvill 1988 0002725193 / 9780002725194 First U.K. Edition/First Printing Fine Fine Signed by Author This copy has been SIGNED by Peter Matthiessen on the title page! This is the first UK edition of this very personal work as Mr. Matthiessen had been a commercial fisherman in his early years. The UK edition contains the text, but not the photos that are in the U.S. edition. "Men's Lives" is a powerful and moving portrait of the fishermen of eastern Long Island, where Peter Matthiessen has lived for thirty-five years. When he first lived there, the community consisted of a few families - fiercely independent descendents of New England's whaling clans - pursuing a noble, simple, dangerous livelihood that had changed little in three centuries. Matthiessen, Peter Tigers In The Snow NY North Point Press 2000 0865475768 / 9780865475762 First Edition/First Printing Fine Fine Signed by Author This copy has been SIGNED by Peter Matthiessen on the half-title page. A gorgeous work, the introduction and photographs are by Maurice Hornocker. Peter Matthiessen journeyed to the Russian Far East and other remaining tiger territory to witness for himself the species' present condition and to understand its possible fates. He has made the tiger’s dilemma not a manifesto but a drama - underscored by Hornocker’s stirring photographs - that conveys powerfully what a loss to our collective imagination the disappearance of these great cats would be.
